Meeting a friend on Spring Street, we decided to go for a
quick lunch at the City Wine Shop. The Wine Shop is owned by the same group
that runs the Spring Street Grocer, European, Ciglo and a few other places in
the vicinity. In keeping with its companion establishments it offers well made
(if somewhat conservative) fare cooked using only the highest quality ingredients.
Choosing to dine in the cool, peaceful, ‘wine cellar’ that
forms the main dining room, I chose the Spagheti and Meatballs and my friend
chose the Vegetarian Quiche and Salad.
The food arrived quickly, and with the same professional
level of service you get at European.
My spaghetti and meatballs was tasty and fulfilling, if not
particularly innovative. The meatballs were a perfect mix of angus beef and
otway pork and were nicely spiced. The Napoli sauce was unexpectedly (but not unpleasantly)
fiery and the pasta was a perfect al dente. I scraped my bowl clean.
The bite of quiche I tried was light, yet cheesy, and the
pastry was very short and crisp. The salad (according to my friend) was nicely dressed
and clearly very fresh. She described it as tasting like a ‘home cooked’ dish
in only the best possible way.
The City Wine Shop is recommended if you are looking for a
quick bite for lunch up near the Parliament and feel like some good, honest,
unpretentious cooking.
Their wine and dessert menus are both extensive and are recommended
for a post dinner treat.
